Climate and Environment
For the safety and care of computers and other hardware, adequate steps should be taken to control the climate and environment.
1. Don't eat or drink near the computers.Food and drink are common causes of computer damage.
2. Keep your computer coolKeeping the computer cool reduces stress on the hard drive. Just like your car needs a radiator, your computer needs those little fans to keep it from overheating. In addition to having fans by the main processors and other drives, make sure there is a fan that blows cool air in and another fan thatpushes the hot air out. It is also important not to cram your computer into a little corner, but to give it plenty of room to breathe. One must ensure that computers and especially servers should not be in an overheated room. Proper arrangements should be made so that there is sufficient air flow to all parts of the computer to allow circulation of air. Generally, temperature in rooms having computers should be 50-80 degrees Fahrenheit (10-26 degrees Celsius). This takes care of heat generated by computers, servers and other devices such as the UPS, etc. Also it's better to install heating and cooling systems with air filters so as to get protection against dust. Another thing to consider is that the humidity should be between 20% and 80% for better care of systems. And installation of heating and cooling systems with air filters goes along way to protect against dust.
3. Keep your computer away from smoke and fire.Fire and smoke can damage computer hardware and other equipments to a great extent, not to mention the danger to human life. It's advisable not to smoke near computers and other hardware devices. It must also be ensured that there are adequate fire extinguishers available that can be used in case of emergency. Fire extinguishers should be able to handle electrical devices. Also, automated fire suppression systems can be used with important machines like servers, etc. Working staff must be trained to use the fire extinguishers and fire suppression systems. Moreover, smoke detectors could be installed in the workplace. Install smoke detectors near machines, as smoke can damage computers.
Do not allow smoking near computers.
Install a monitoring system that monitors the physical environment and warns of dangerous changes.
Make sure staff is trained in the use of all fire suppression systems.
4. Protect against water damage and flooding.Make sure that the computer isn't stored on a damp floor or any other place that might be destroyed in case of an environmental emergency. Install water sensors on the floor. Let wet machines dry out before attempting to use them.
