8) Question of the Month about Technical Training:Each month Scott Turton will answer a current or important question that we have received about computer and IT training and career development.
Sepember 2006 Question of the Month:What is Microsoft's new Live.com website and how can it help me?
Microsoft announced on September 12, 2006 that its new Live.com website was no longer in beta status. This new site will be the company's new search site, along with giving users the ability to customize it to their liking, and to store their own images and data. The following are three descriptive news articles about Live.com that will give you a good understanding of what it offers.
- Answer:
Microsoft to launch "Windows Live" search engine
Microsoft said it aims to improve the search experience by allowing for refined queries and presenting results on a new user-friendly interface.
A main component of the Internet revamp is Windows Live Search with a new look and features such as easier browsing of searched images, suggestions of related links and a scratch pad to allow users to store pictures and information.
Microsoft also said it will launch ... a Web page that users can customize with news from various sources, weather and links to e-mail.
The Redmond, Washington-based company also said it will offer Windows Live Local Search, a mapping service, in the United States and Britain.
A Look Inside Windows Live Search
In previous months, it was personalization that had been touted by Microsoft developers as the feature that will cast Live Search in an entirely new category, separate from Google's homepage. Last June, developers at the company's TechEd 2006 conference in Boston demonstrated rapidly generated Web services, called mashups, which admins could conceivably assemble with minimum effort, based on information services published through an XML-based model developed by Microsoft.
But for right now, the personalization feature is a little quieter, and harder to find than in earlier betas. On the surface, it enables users to choose which of four sub-pages -- "Basics," "News," "Sports," or "Entertainment" -- to attach to her Live.com startup page. Once one of these sub-pages is created, its name appears in the tab bar, which re-emerges after having been wiped clean from the startup page's current incarnation.
By clicking on "New Page," the user creates a blank tab. From there, "Add Stuff" brings up a directory of RSS news feeds and Live.com-associated news services. Some of these items that qualify under the class of "stuff" are "gadgets," and it's here -- at long last -- where users may at some future date find the mashups which were once considered the thing that made Live.com "live."
Live.com goes live
The company (Microsoft) revealed that Live Search would be replacing the older MSN Search portal on MSN.com and all of Microsoft's web-based search products, including the MSN Search option on the toolbar in Internet Explorer 7.
(Live.com) has quickly grown to become a major focus of development at the Redmond-based company. Astute Microsoft observers will have noticed that many products that were formerly marketed under the MSN brand name have been slowly absorbed into the Live collective, such as Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Spaces.
I hope this help you.
