May 2007 Question of the Month:What are the best Free, Open Source Security Tools available that can be used in a complex or enterprise network environment?
In my opinion, here are the best open source security tools available today.

OSSEC is a Host-based Intrusion Detection System that does log analysis, integrity checking, Windows registry monitoring, rootkit detection, real-time alerting and active response. It runs on most operating systems, including Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, MacOS, Solaris and Windows.
Bro Intrusion Detection System is a Unix and Linux-based Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) that passively monitors network traffic and checks for suspicious activity. Bro's analysis includes detection of specific attacks (defined both by signatures and events) and unusual activities that are compared to malicious patterns.
Nagios is an enterprise-class monitoring solutions for hosts, services, and networks. It is totally modular and permits users to extend its functionality through plugins
Nessus Vulnerability Scanner version 2 is available for free as open source. It scans devices and identifies remote flaws in your network and enterprise, and also verifies that the host is not compromised and has up-to-date patches.
